Nota Biográfica

Jeffrey Kentor holds joint appointments as Research Professor at IMDEA Social Sciences and Professor of Sociology at the University of Utah, where he is a Senior Investigator at the Institute for Public and International Affairs. He is Senior Editor of the International Journal of Comparative Sociology and sits on the Editorial Boards of the Rose Monograph Series and the Journal of World System Research. He is also Chair of the Political Economy of the World System section of the American Sociological Association. He has been the recipient of research grants from the National Science Foundation and the World Society Foundation among others, and has received numerous research and teaching awards. His work has been published in leading sociology journals, including the American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, Social Forces, International Sociology, and Social Problems. He is also the author of Capital and Coercion (Routledge 2000), which examines the long term economic and military processes that shape the global economy. Professor Kentor’s research is located within the broad area of macro-level social change. His work focuses on long-term processes and structures of the world economy, frequently referred to as “globalization”, and its impact on economic development, income inequality, social welfare, international migration, and the environment. He is a leading figure in the debate on the impact of foreign investment on economic development. A major emphasis of his current work is on the expansion of transnational corporate power over the past forty years, and its effect on political corruption and internal violence. He is also currently studying the role of military institutions on society.In addition to these interests, Dr. Kentor publishes in the areas of environmental degradation, global city formation, and international migration.
